University Life Commission Report March 7, 2007

Happy week 10! I want to thank my commission right now for all their hard work that they have put in this quarter, and this year at that. We have accomplished so much more than I have ever seen University Life do in the past and I’m proud to be the University Life Commissioner.
This week I met with the Honorary Degree Committee for the final time to discuss the candidates. I am happy with the 5 nominations that the committee decided to send forward to the President and the Board of Trustees.
I also met with the Sexual Health Seminar committee for the last time this quarter to discuss the resolution that is up for tonight. This group has been working hard since November, and even though a lot more needs to be done regarding this issue, we have gotten really far in the three months that we have been meeting.
I met with the Mass Email Committee on Tuesday and discussed the working draft. An idea was proposed to create some sort of bulletin board for students to use when promoting events, looking for advice in classes or general information sharing and help. It was proposed that the Student Senate look at this and develop it. I will be talking to the group again about other alternatives to the development or coordination amongst groups. We discussed which groups had the right to send emails, whom didn’t, how to obtain emails, other schools and the way that they distribute news and distribute it.
Our weekly Free Speech Committee meeting was held last night. We still have a lot of work to do, but in our few meetings, the group has pretty much formed a consensus in the draft that GSS made and everyone seems to be happy. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of work that still needs to go into it and problems that need to be ironed out, but I am really pleased at the direction that the committee is headed toward.
Today I had my last meeting of the quarter on the Suicide Response Protocol Committee. We talked about an informational session on the suicide response protocol that would be mandatory for all people employed by the university. It would mirror the current mandated session for all employees on reporting sexual assault information. A lot of time has gone into communication efforts for student safety and uniformity.
Intern Jamie has been looking into where the monies from Baker come from for students in the dining halls.
Senator Bell has been working with VP Crites, researching different schools and the Student Board of Trustees’ voting rights. He has also been working with IAC about the athletic cuts and Shared Governance Day.
Senator Sanderson and Hanrahan both attended the Free Speech Meeting and added to debate. Senator Sanderson is also starting to join me in the Suicide Response Protocol Committee and Senator Hanrahan is ironing out her research on the Leadership Center.

Some other things that we are going to be looking at next quarter are the opening buildings on campus and Campus Beautification Day. I plan on getting either Terry Hogan or Patti McSteen to talk to Senate about Alcohol Edu asap.
Thanks to my commission again for a great quarter and have a good exams week and spring break.

Hey everyone! This week I met with Dr. Smith regarding the Free Speech Committee. We spoke about litigation and case law, safety concerns and reservable rights. I want to publicly thank Dr. Smith for all the time and effort he has put into the committee, the willingness to meet with committee members, and his evidence I received today on cases brought not only to Ohio University regarding free speech, but other institutions as well. Along the same lines, the Free Speech Committee met on Tuesday to once talk about the current policy in place. Members of Graduate Student Senate drafted a revised proposal and presented it to the committee. The committee also talked about designated “reservable spaces” on campus and the idea of who should have the privilege of reserving these spaces.

Tuesday Senator Bell and I met with Dean Hogan and the Mass Email Committee. I showed the committee Student Senate’s opinion on issue, and discussion spurred from those ideas. The committee dissected the notes created thus far and designated research that needed to be done by staff members before the next meeting.

Today I met with Patti McSteen and Dr. Heaton regarding the Suicide Response Protocol Committee. We have almost a finished draft to present to Dr. Smith and the administration, which will also be run through Senate in a resolution form. The Hudson Psychological Center is really going to need our help with this initiative, so if you are interested in helping out, please let me know!

Besides committee meetings, I have been checking and responding to the message board, conducting one on ones with my senators and interns, and attended the event. I want to thank all the interns for all the hard work they put into the event.

Senator Hanrahan is investigating the University Creed, and the Leadership Center.

Senator Sanderson has been emailing her student organizations and plans on getting involved with the Suicide Response Protocol Committee.

Senator Bell attended the State of the Senate address. He is diligently working on the Athletic cuts, meeting with coaches, and looking at legislature at Rutgers University about cuts that happened there recently. Senator Bell is also asking senate members to pick up repetitions this week to send around classrooms and at other organizational meetings.

Dean Hogan or someone on his staff will hopefully be presenting at the next meeting regarding Alcohol Edu.

Have a good weekend and end of report!

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! This week has been busy with committee meetings, once again. Friday Commissioner Robbins and I had a meeting with the Sexual Health Seminar Committee. We discussed:

  • Communication
    • Staff position in form of GA (partnership with Scripps College of Communication & Health & Human Services)
      • Web (GA position)
        • Legal & ethical
        • Sexual health seminar - Male

Resolution to follow.

Commissioner Robbins and I also met after the meeting to talk about TBTN. Our conversation was short, but productive. I’m getting excited for TBTN and Pride Week to be here.

I met with Rules and Procedures on Friday. Enough Said. Please carefully consider the resolution tonight.

Friday I attended the Intern Dinner and auction. Dinner was amazing and Elaine and the interns did an awesome. Thank everyone for that.

Saturday I attended the opening of the New Woman’s Center and hung around the office and talked to student from other schools.

Last night I held the first committee meeting about “Free Speech “Zones””. The meeting was awesome, and I was glad that we had representation from Student Senate, Grad Student Senate and Students for a Democratic Society. A lot of issues we discussed, along with some solutions. I definitely enjoyed being mediator and think I should get a gavel for this committee alone. Hopefully in the coming weeks we will not only get a bigger room, but we can get some kind of resolution out of this.

Senator Bell and I met on Monday and discussed the Mass Email Policy. If any one has ideas about anything, let us know. He has also been working on the Special Committee on Atheltics.

Senator Hanrahan is in the works of working with My Sister’s Place and is looking into the University Creed.

Senator Sanderson is on the Free Speech Committee and is researching the Leadership Center.

Senator Skirtich is looking at the music file sharing program C++.

Have a good day!

End of Report.
