Hey everyone, I hope you’re having a great week.

This week, my biggest activity was the High Achieving Women Meeting on Tuesday. There were several presentations and discussions on the issue of retention for high-achieving women.  Conversation centered around identifying issues or possible problems, discussing retention programs already in place, how they can perhaps be supplemented, and other possible programs to be created.  I thank Commissioner Heery for his attendance at this meeting; I think it was a wonderful opportunity to bring students, faculty and administration together to discuss, and it is obvious that there are a lot of individuals continuing to work diligently on this issue.

-Provost Krendl announced at the meeting that she and Judith Grant have decided to extend the search for the director of the new women’s center.  I have a meeting with Dr. Grant this week to discuss the center, and I plan to discuss with her the opportunity to have student voices in this decision.

-Our commission’s interns have been making contacts for Take Back the Night.  We are attending a Take Back the Night ralley on Thursday in Pickerington so they get a taste of what it’s all about.  I also met with Chief Rick Mayer this past week regarding the parade.  Again if you are interested in helping with this event, let me know.

-Our intern Bria is taking care of ordering shower hangers, which will be distributed when they come in early winter quarter.

-There is a meeting this Friday to discuss the retention and diversity forum, and Commissioner’s Roder, Diehl and myself are meeting Tuesday to lay out the groundwork for a lighting walk early winter quarter.

Women’s Affairs Commissioner’s Report:
11/01/06

This week was busy with discussion about Sexual Health Seminars in Hudson.  I have been working with Brittany Buxton and Kristen Delo of GSS on this, and after the last GSS meeting a committee has been formed to discuss this issue and hopefully will reach some conclusions when we meet.  I’ll also be attending the next GSS meeting about it.

Women’s planning for the Herstory Celebration began this week.  My commission will be assisting with this and helping out.

We’re also in contact with UPC about performance artists for Take Back the Night.   Elaine Kaylor and I are meeting to discuss a fundraiser for my Sister’s Place, other plans for the week include an art show, self defense workshops, and more.  We’re going to be having a weekly planning meeting starting winter quarter – so if anyone wants to be on the steering committee we’d love to have you.

As stated last week, we will be implementing the Shower Hangers Elaine got approved last year.  It looks as though this will be taken care of before the end of the quarter or at least in early winter quarter.  Judy Piercy of has informed us that all we need do is distribute them to the directors who will take care of putting them in place.

Judith Grant is going to be contacting me by the end of the week for our end of the quarter meeting about the new Women’s Center.  Our planning in this has gone really well, and we’ve made a lot of great contacts with other women’s organizations across campus.   I look forward to finishing this up next quarter.

I will be assisting Senator Allen in her work on a Greek Life directory, which I’m sure she will report more on later.

Also, invitations are currently being composed and sent for the forum on diversity and retention.

First of all, this week Commissioner Roder and I have been working on the Year of the Woman Resolution that will be discussed later this evening.

Additionally, Commissioners, Roder Diehl and myself met this past week to finalize the scope of the Standing Committee on Safety; Dr. Bernt was to send her opinions and review this with the Committee on Committees and will be getting back to us.

On Saturday my commission marched in the Homecoming Parade as part of the Herstory Committee.  This was a wonderful day for us, in which we enjoyed uniting women’s groups from the community and the campus.  We had the opportunity to network with several groups within the community who are interested in working together this year.

On Monday I attended the Women Acting for a Change Weekly meeting; we will be working closely this year, which I’m very excited about.  We exchanged ideas about programming for winter and spring quarters.

My commission has been going to meetings throughout the week to contact groups to participate both in the Retention and Diversity Forum and the Women’s Center Opening.

I had a meeting this past week with Gina Mamome for Take Back the Night planning, and she offered invaluable advice for the planning of the week. I’ve also spoken to several potential speakers throughout this week and am brainstorming programming ideas with some groups and individuals on our steering committee.  I also have a meeting after Halloween with Chief Rick Mayor about the week.

I’ve heard back from Lindsay Orchowski, who is planning and implementing the large scale sexual assault and violence prevention campaign on campus.  She and I are going to meet for coffee next week to discuss our involvement in this program.

Finally, I got in contact with Steve Mack who is in favor of completing and implementing the shower hangers that Elaine got approved last year, and I will be working with him to accomplish this.

Women’s Affairs Commissioner’s Report

Hello everyone, I hope you’ve had a wonderful week so far.

This week, formal planning for Take Back the Night began.  I have a meeting tomorrow with Gina Mamome who has helped organized TBTN’s across the country; participants and supporters of past events have offered their thoughts and ideas for this year that Gina and I will be discussing.  I also have a meeting next week with Lt. Dan Stewart to discuss safety issues for the events, which will be the first week in May.

On Saturday, my commission will be marching in the Homecoming Parade representing TBTN, if you are interested in joining us please let me know.

My week was busy with Commissioners Walker and Wemer; we met frequently regarding Resolutions that will be discussed this evening.

We are continuing to go to meetings of other women’s organizations to get involvement in the planning of the Women’s Center, which is going quite well.  A meeting with Judith Grant to finalize these plans is pending.

Tuesday night various commissions met to discuss the upcoming forum on retention.  We laid some groundwork and set a date for the event.

Commissioners Diehl, Roder and myself will be meeting to finalize the scope of the proposed Standing Committee on Safety.  Plans for a lighting walks are still in the works, and will take place after the finalizing of this resolution and Halloween events.

As stated last week, my commission has been receiving concerns about the opportunities to receive birth control and other gynecological issues on campus.  I have contacted members of GSS who are also addressing this issue at a graduate student level.  I’m still waiting for information on the proposed freshman sexual assault awareness program.  My commission has also offered our assistance with the Colleges Against Cancer events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October.

This week several groups are on board to help with the planning of the Women's Center Opening; and I am scheduling a meeting with Judith Grant to finalize these plans as well as become informed about the final plans for the Women’s Center’s programming, status of the selection of the director, etc.  I will be working closely with Brittany Buxton, GSS Women’s Affairs Commissioner on this project.

Commissioners Roder, Diehl, and I, met today to discuss a possible Standing Committee on Campus Safety.  We met on Monday with Dr. Phyllis Bernt who was supportive of this matter and will assist us with proceeding further.

Gina Memone, president and CEO of Riot Girl, inc., which is a nonprofit that assists in Take Back the Nights throughout the nation, has volunteered to assist in some of our Take Back the Night Plans.  We look forward to her coming on board.

My commission is working to clear up misconceptions and raise awareness about the process of receiving birth control on campus.  We also hope to work with part of the newly funded sexual assault awareness campaign for freshmen to get some information distributed. I’ve contacted the individuals Elaine worked with last year to get breast examination shower hangers approved, and we are working to have more of those distributed.

Along with several other commissioners, we will be active in the planning and participating in the retention forum that Commissioner Heery suggested.

This week, I also met this week with Commissioners Wemer and Walker to discuss a future resolution and other affairs within our commissions.
