Residence Life

Commissioner Chris Diehl

Thank you Madam President.  Good evening everyone, I hope you’re all having a wonderful second week.  I’d like to thank everyone who attended the Alcohol Response Policy Forum last Thursday.  Depending upon which paper you believe, we had an attendance somewhere between 20 and 35, which I felt was fairly strong.

The Residence Life Commission is officially off and running, as we held our first meeting last night.  Senator Golby contacted Christine Sheets, the Director of Residence and Auxiliary Services, regarding the increase in laundry prices and is awaiting her reply.  In the meantime, Senators Golby, Finical, and Smith will be researching laundry costs at our peer institutions, other MAC schools and the local Laundry Mats.  There will be a resolution writing pow-wow in the Senate Office Sunday at 6:30.  I encourage you all to attend and give us some input.

We’ve also got the ball rolling on setting up Halloween Info sessions later this fall.  Sen. Smith is contacting a representative from OUPD to come in and speak and Sen. Finical will be contacting SDS to see if they would be interested in joining us as well.  The plan is to have one session on each green sometime during the week of October 23.

We’re also keeping an ear to the ground on two important issues: the new alcohol response policy and the Jefferson Dining Hall situation.  If any of you receive comments on either of these matters, I would ask that you let us know so that we can address them.

In addition, I’ve e-mailed Director Piercy regarding obtaining a copy of the new substance free housing contract and another issue that I was unaware of, and perhaps some of you may know a little more, but apparently we’re not allowed to have overnight guests of the opposite sex in the residence halls.  I thought this was resolved a few years ago, but this is news to me so I’ll keep you all updated.

END OF REPORT
