Commission Report

27 September 2006

This past week, the Residence Life Commission got together, with the help of several other Senators and Commissioners, and pounded out a resolution regarding the guest registration and visitation policies.  Due to technical difficulties, it will not be up until next week, but it is posted and I suggest you all read it and come prepared to offer suggestions.

Dining with cops, a tRAC initiative which we have agreed to assist with, will be starting in the next couple weeks.  Ideally, Green Senators and OUPD Officers will be eating diner in the dining hall with students.  The Green Senators will be contacting Kevin Yurasek to arrange times.

Senator reports:  Sens. Kostiha and Finical met with Cathy Murphy, the RD in Bromely and generated some interesting ideas which we will be addressing.  Sens. Noble and Smith contacted the RDs on South Green to introduce themselves and open windows of communication.  Sen. Smith is also researching opportunities for transfer students.  She found that, at Western Michigan, there was a Residence Hall floor reserved especially for transfer students.  We thought that was pretty cool and she will be looking into the program further.

We’ve tentatively scheduled a Reverse Trick or Treat in the Residence halls for Monday, October 16 at 9:00 p.m.  Hopefully, we will be working with U. Life and the interns on this, as well as the communications staff because we all know I’m severely handicapped in the creativity department.  We also welcome any others who wish to participate.  In the near future, we will be wrapping up the laundry situation and hopefully have a recommendation before the General Body within the next couple of weeks.  We’re also hoping to coordinate an on-campus lighting walk with U. Life and Women’s Affairs, as well as reexamining Senate Resolution 0405-65, regarding the creation of a University Standing Committee on Safety.  In addition, Commissioners Wemer, Heery, and I have begun a preliminary discussion on the creation of a Gender and Sexuality RLC.  More details to come.
