Residence Life Commission Report

This past week, half of the Residence Life Commission met to do business.  We’ll start with the half that was present.  Senator Nobel is coordinating our Reverse Trick or Treat efforts with Intern Director Kaylor and U. Life Commissioner Roder.  He is also getting in touch with Terry Koons to investigate the University’s smoking policy.  Senator Smith completed her message board training this week and has been working diligently on transfer student accommodations.  She has set up meetings to discuss some of her ideas with Director Piercy of Residence Life and Vice President Smith.  She’s also drawn up our Reverse Trick or Treat fliers.  Senator Finical has e-mailed her RD’s and is contacting West Green Director Jim Sand about presenting at our Halloween Info Session.

Moving to those Senators who were not in attendance, Senator Kostiha, who e-mailed me an update, has reserved Boyd basement for the aforementioned Halloween Info. session on West Green.   It will be held Monday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m.  Sadly, Senators Golby and Pollard are MIA this week.

Next, the resolution on Guest Registration and Visitation is up this evening.  I hope you’ve all looked it over and have some questions.  I know we have a few amendments, so bear with us.

As I stated earlier, Reverse Trick or Treat is scheduled for Monday, October 16, at 9:00 p.m.  For those of you who are interested, the sign up sheet is going around.  We will be meeting in the Senate Office at 8:45 and be dispersing from there.  Currently, we plan on hitting the following Res. Halls: Washington, Bush, Jefferson, Shively, the Front 4, Fenzel, Body, Wilson, and the Convo.

In other news, I finally got an administrative response regarding the increase in laundry costs.  It appears the issue is more complicated than we originally anticipated, as the University contracts out the laundry services.  After speaking with Christine Sheets of Residence and Auxiliaries, I learned that over the summer the vending company increased the price it was charging the University because of increases in “gas and other utilities.”  Supposedly, the University has held laundry costs stable “for years.”  The Residence Life Commission will be looking into this matter further throughout the next few weeks and decide upon a prudent course of action.

Starting Monday, the Substance Free Task force will be meeting to discuss changes to the current substance free policy and application process.

Commissioners Robbins, Roder, and I have been continuing to research the possibility of the creation of a University Standing Committee on Safety.  More info to come later.

Finally, on Friday, I will be meeting with Kevin Yurasek, who is the Chair of the Dining Services Development Committee, to discuss the future of the Oasis and the newly created “Dining with Cops” program.
