11 October 2006 Residence Life Commission Report Good evening. We’ll begin tonight with Senator’s reports. Senator Nobel has arranged to attend hall council meetings on South Green next week. He has also contacted Terry Koons regarding the University’s smoking policy. He also attended Ohio Unplugged. Senator Smith has set up a meeting with Dr. Smith, Judy Piercy and others to discuss issues facing transfer students. If you have any suggestions, or know of any students who have transferred here from other universities, please get in touch with her. She also created the quarter sheets for Reverse Trick or Treat, as well as the fliers for our Halloween Info. Sessions. Senators Kostiha and Finical have arranged to attend the West Green Senior Staff meeting next Tuesday. Senator Pollard and I attended the first meeting of the Substance Free Task force on Monday. The group will be meeting throughout the remainder of the quarter and discussing the meaning of substance free, what it should and should not encompass, and also whether or not any adjustments should be made to the program. We are, as always, open to your suggestions, so if you have any please speak with either Jarrod or myself. Finally, we are delighted to have Senator Golby back after his two week sabbatical. He has been continuing to follow up on laundry issues and attended the DSDC meeting earlier this evening. I would just like to say he was very sorely missed and, after the football game this Sunday, he himself will be very sore. In other news, I’m sure you’re all now very much aware of the situation facing The Oasis. (If you’re not, you were obviously asleep during the first part of the meeting). In response to student’s interest and efforts, Senate will be hosting an open forum / panel discussion next Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the Baker 1804 Lounge. The makeup of the panel is still TBA, as we are still awaiting confirmation from some of our invitees. Just a note, if this seems hurried it is because we wanted to afford students the opportunity to voice their concern and offer alternative suggestions before the Board meeting next week. Hopefully, some good ideas and discussion will arise out of this event and allow us to write a resolution proposing a solution. More on that to come. Commissioners Robbins, Roder and I met with Faculty Senate Chair Phyllis Bernt on Monday to discuss the creation of a University Standing Committee on Safety. We hope to have a recommendation to her by the Oct. 25 meeting of the Committee on Committees. If you have any suggestions as to who should be on the committee and what its scope should encompass, please see either of us after the meeting. Also, Reverse Trick or Treat is this Monday. All of you who wish to partake, please meet in the Senate Office at 8:45 p.m. Just another reminder, the Halloween Info. Sessions are coming up on Monday, Oct. 23 at 9 p.m. on East Green (Shively) and South Green (South Pole) and 6:30 p.m. on West Green (Boyd Basement). END OF REPORT
