Residence Life Commission Report

Good evening everyone.  I’d like to start off by welcoming our three new interns, Katie, Joni, and Jennifer.  They were eager to get started and are doing some research on disability housing selection this week.  They will be looking into what the current ADA requirements are, how many students with disabilities we have on campus, how many disability rooms are available on campus, and what are the procedures one must go through to reserve one of these rooms.  I must say, we are looking forward to what they come up with.

For Senators reports this week; all of them attended the “Dinner with your Senator” event that was held last night.  From what I understand, the event was fairly successful as they spoke with several students who were interested in Senate as well as some of the issues that we are wrestling with: specifically Halloween, guest registration and the future of the Oasis.  They all also took part in Reverse Trick or Treat on Monday.  Thank you to everyone who helped pass out candy and speak with students.  We had about 20 interns and senators and the event was very successful.

Senator Nobel attended Cady, Foster, Brough Hall Council and plans on helping with their Athens trick or treat this Monday.  He’s also been in contact with Terry Koons regarding the smoking policy, and will be getting in touch with U. Life to see if we can collaborate on that.  Senator Smith met with Dr. Smith earlier in the week to discuss options for transfer students.  She will be hosting a focus group/ discussion this Friday with members of Res. Life Central and Senior staffs to get further input and suggestions.  Senator Golby will be e-mailing Christine Sheets to gather some financial data on the laundry situation.

On Monday, I attended another meeting of the Substance Free Task Force.  Those are Mondays at 7 pm in Atkinson for those of you who are interested.  We’re still brainstorming ideas for what exactly should substance free mean, i.e. what happens if you’re arrested off-campus for drinking or in another dorm?  Or, what happens if you drink outside of the substance free dorm, but come back drunk and cause a disturbance?  If any of you have any input on this, please e-mail me or see me after the meeting.

This Monday, we will be holding our Halloween Info. sessions on each of the Greens.  West will be at 6:30 in Boyd basement, South will be at 9:00 at the South Pole, and East will also be at 9:00 in Shively Dining Hall.  Hopefully we’ll see some of you there.

Finally, the Oasis forum was earlier this evening.
